The first thing i would recommend doing is testing the door for balance and anything that might be binding the door. Your garage door has set limit switches that instruct the motor when to stop running both when it is opening and when it is closing. To check the balance pull the emergency release cord or chain to disconnect the door. If your door doesn t come down that far you can adjust the automatic opener until it does.

Garage doors come with a disconnect switch or cord so you can operate your door manually in the event of a power outage. From here lift the garage door by hand about 3 feet above the ground and then release the door and see were it lands. If you have disconnected the opener locate your garage door lock.
