Heat Transfer Images Onto Fabric

This technique is used in t shirt printing so you will hear of this sheet as t shirt transfers.

Heat transfer images onto fabric.

Trace firmly over the design to press a faint outline onto your surface. The heat transfer sheet is a special polymer coated paper which is used to make a copy of your favourite photograph with a color laser copier or printer and then it is heat set onto fabric. Cut out your fabric to 27x55cm and sew a single hem along one of the short edges. Flip your reverse image heat transfer sheet over.

When i first started crafting image transfer to fabric gave me a lot of difficulty. Flip the image so that it is mirrored using your computer programme or printer settings then print onto a sheet of image transfer paper. Fabric paint is much thicker than standard craft paint so it will need frequent reloading. If you are transferring the graphic onto a bag place the hard surface in between the layers.

4 heat transfer sheets. Place a fabric scrap or a teflon sheet over the backing. Place a hard heat resistant surface like a spare piece of wood or sturdy cardboard underneath the surface of the fabric. Cut out leaving a 5mm border all round.

Image transfer to fabric is a breeze with heat transfer paper. You will need a thin detail brush for this. The image is transferred to the tea towel using transfer paper sold in art stores layered underneath your printed image. The printed image will be facing down on your fabric.
