With the oil control rings loaded on the piston use a proper ring installation tool to open the second groove rings with the top mark facing up.

Back clearance can best be measured by pushing the ring into the piston ring groove until it bottoms against the root of the groove. Al will walk you through how to install piston rings with and without a set of piston ring expander pliers. Place the ring squarely into the piston groove taking care to keep it flat. Work the opened ring down from the top of the piston to the oil groove.

Work the opened ring down from the top of the piston to the second groove. Ross racing oil rings should have between 003 and 005 side clearance. Rings with a groove in the outside diameter and a pip mark or dot on the side must be installed with the groove toward the bottom of the piston and pip mark towards the top of the piston. It is a good idea after installing all rings on the pistons to recheck each ring on each piston for correct installation.

Using a proper ring installation tool open the oil ring just enough to allow the ring to go over the top diameter of the piston. Release the tension of the ring installer tool.
